Hinatuan Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Nickel Asia Corp. (NAC), conducted a coastal cleanup in celebration of the Month of the Ocean.
Through its Mine Environmental Protection and Enhancement Department (MEPED), HMC held the cleanup activity in coastal areas within the community participated by employees from different departments and sections.
MEPED head Manuel A. Torres, Jr. said that the pandemic was not a hindrance for them to take care of the environment.
“Amidst the pandemic, our environmental stewardship and excellence doesn't hinder us to protect our natural resources, a pledge we have committed not only to our country but throughout the world,” said Torres.
The Month of the Ocean is being celebrated every May by all countries across the globe. This year, the theme of the celebration is: "The Science we need, for the ocean we want," inspired by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
Aside from the coastal clean-up, HMC also conducted Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activity to educate the community on how to take care of marine resources.
HMC also recognized the company’s registered and BFAR trained fish wardens who were deputized to protect the marine resources of the Hinatuan island.
In addition, HMC MEPED distributed give-aways as a token to the avid listeners and participants of the Green Island—HMC’s environmental bulletin for the months of February, March, and April.
The mining company also disseminated pictures, videos, infographics, and articles to the community to better grasp the concept of environmental protection and its importance to the whole world.
