Hinatuan Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Nickel Asia Corp. (NAC), in partnership with DENR Caraga, conducted a paralegal training for the renewal of its accredited Deputized Environment and Natural Resources Officers (DENROs) on May 5, 2021 at the HMC Mine Site.

Accredited DENROs were re-educated on relevant laws and policies pertaining to preservation and protection of the environment such as Wildlife Resources Protection and Conservation Act (RA9147), the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act (RA 7586), the revised forestry code of the Philippines (PD705), and the Chainsaw Act (RA 9175).

The move was part of HMC’s commitment to environmental protection, conservation, and enhancement.

During the training, DENR Region XIII also introduced an innovative approach to environmental conservation monitoring known as the Landscape and Wildlife Location System (LAWIN).

Through the Special-Order No. 0288, series of 2019 issued by DENR Region XIII, HMC has been actively implementing its environmental protection and conservation management with the help of its Deputized ENROs.

Island patrolling, biodiversity monitoring, and information dissemination are just a few of the activities that the DENRO conducts every month. Illegal activities on the island, such as illegal cutting and collection of trees and timber poaching, were completely eliminated as a result of this program.

In addition, HMC diligently submits a monthly DENRO accomplishment report to the City Environment and Natural Office (CENRO).

As a result of these efforts, HMC's DENRO has been recognized by the DENR RO XIII for its excellence not only in environmental protection but also in activities that contribute to the island's sustainability.

During the training, DENR Region XIII representative Felrose Deguitos hailed the company, saying, "Of all mining companies in Caraga with accredited DENROs, HMC is the most active and compliant when it comes to the implementation of DENRO activities."

HMC's sincere commitment to the protection and conservation of the environment and its natural resources led the company to engage in activities that enforce not only sustainable management of natural resources but also environmental protection, particularly in our forest.

By conducting this renewal training, HMC-DENROs ensure that they will continue to fulfill their duties on environmental protection and conservation.
