Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC) joined the world in this year’s observance of Earth Hour by switching off non-essential electric lights hour from 8:30PM to 9:30PM last March 27, 2021.
With the theme: “Climate Change to Save Earth,” the 15th Earth Hour was observed around the world in support of our mother nature and combating climate change.
Apart from switching off non-essential electric lights, HMC, a subsidiary of Nickel Asia Corp. (NAC), also lighted 53 paper bag lanterns as a symbolic gesture and commitment to our planet.
To strengthen the information towards climate change, HMC through its Mine Environmental Protection and Enhancement Department (MEPED) also staged the best perspective photography contest in light of the small lantern festival.
HMC employees showed their photography skills using their mobile phones to capture memorable moments during the event.
“This is just a simple but elegant way of inculcating the theme of the celebration to the heart and minds of the participants,” an employee said.
The Office of the Resident Mine Manager (ORMM) division swept clean the photography contest bagging all places and was declared as the Champion, ORMM-Health landed second and ORMM-Accounting bagged the third place.
Apart from the photography contest, HMC MEPED also initiated various games with prizes given to winners after a short Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) progam.
Held annually, Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The event encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet Earth.
