In fulfillment of its commitment to uplift the lives of its host and neighboring communities by providing access to quality education, Taganito Mining Corporation (TMC) has vowed to continue its full scholarship and financial assistance grants to deserving college students.
The full academic scholarship program of TMC is part of its Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) under the Development of Mining Technology and Geosciences (DMTG) that aims to help bright students from the host and neighboring communities to have a better education.
For the school year 2017-2018, TMC awarded scholarship grants to 59 financially disadvantaged but academically able students from the municipalities of Claver, Gigaquit and Bacuag – the biggest number in a single batch to date.
TMC provides financial support, learning, experience, exposure and mentoring partnerships to these scholars taking up degree courses related to mining and community development.
Monetary assistance covers tuition and miscellaneous fees, book requirements, transportation needs, board and lodging, clothing, board review and board examination fees.
The scholarship is renewable per semester provided that student maintains the grade-point average requirement of 85 percent per subject.
Moreover, TMC will serve as partner-institution in the work immersion program of various universities/schools and other student organization partnerships.
TMC remains true to its commitment of social responsibility and good corporate citizenship to its host and even to the neighboring communities by implementing projects with long-term benefits towards the improvement of the quality of lives of people in mining communities.
Last May 12, 59 senior high school and three college students, who are all scholars of TMC, graduated for school year 2017-2018 at St. Paul University Surigao (SPU).
Under the Academic Track – Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Kim Namie J. Verano and Abigail Araojo graduated with honors while 42 scholars received their deportment awards.
Through TMC’s scholarship program, these 59 senior high school graduates will pursue a college degree in premier schools such as Caraga State University and SPU.
For the college scholars, Felma Peraz graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education while Irene Ercillo was recognized as Gold Awardee among the Mining Engineering graduates. Both of them graduated at SPU-Surigao.
Jhona Cuanan, on the other hand, graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education at Caraga State University.
As an expression of their gratitude, the parents and guardians of the graduates organized a simple thanksgivingcelebration for the TMC community relations team which consisted of a short program, a traditional boodle fight and turn-over of plaque of gratitude to the company.
“We are very thankful to TMC for the support given to us for the past two years. If we, parents rely solely in our financial capacities, we will not be able to send our children to schools like St. Paul University Surigao. Our heartfelt thanks to the company and its management,” shared Joel Verano, in behalf of the parents.
Since 2010, TMC has been supporting the education of 109 college students from the municipalities of Claver, Gigaquit and Bacuag under the SDMP-DMTG scholarship program.
To date, the program has already produced 74 graduates (59 Senior High School and 15 college graduates). Ten of these graduates now work in TMC, seven of them are licensed mining engineers and the remaining three are environmental science graduates.
