Cimatu Lauds RTNMC For Best Practice Award

No less than Secretary Roy Cimatu of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) lauded Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) for winning in the 1st ASEAN Mineral Awards.

RTNMC, an operating company (OpCo) of Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) won the Best Practices in Mineral Mining category, beating entries from other member-countries of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

After they received the award during the gala dinner of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Minerals in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, officials of RTNMC and OceanaGold, which won in the category Best Practices in Mineral Processing, made a courtesy call to Cimatu.

Accompanied by the members of the executive committee of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, they presented to Cimatu the awards they won in Myanmar recently.

In acknowledgment, Cimatu remarked that “the best evidence that we do responsible mining in the Philippines are these trophies before me.”

Chamber of Mines chairman Gerard Brimo, who is also the President and CEO of NAC, used the opportunity to inform Sec Cimatu that the Chamber member-companies will sign a “Baguio Accord.”

The “Baguio Accord” is a commitment of mining companies to the challenges posed by the Secretary during his speech at the 64th Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) celebration in Baguio last month.

Likewise, the Chamber informed Cimatu that its members would adopt the Toward Sustainable Mining (TSM) program of the Mining Association of Canada during a signing ceremony to be held on December 19, with the Secretary himself as witness.
