CMC joins Earth Day celebration

Cagdianao Mining Corporation (CMC), an operating company of Nickel Asia Corporation, joined the world in commemorating Earth Day 2021.

Following this year’s theme, "Restore Our Earth," CMC held various activities to further strengthen its commitment to protect the environment.

At the same time, CMC reaffirmed that it will fulfill its commitment to promote the responsible development of the country's natural resources.

Led by Engr. Arnilo C. Milaor, CMC Resident Mine Manager, employees and managers marched to one of the company’s mined-out areas to plant endemic and native seedlings.

They planted AGRO crops, such as cassava, kamote and corn on the mined out areas of CMC.

The initiative is one of the company's best practices by maximizing the utilization of land through intercropping of AGRO crops with forest trees.

This participatory tree planting kick off by the leaders of the company aims to symbolize the commitment to be stewards of the environment and to keep the responsibility of environmental awareness to their subordinates.

They also recommitted themselves to the tenets of sustainable and responsible development of the country's natural resources, in a manner that is fair and equitable for all Filipinos.

“On this day, we also renew our commitment to the community to leave the land better than we found it at the end of our mine life, and to always ensure that our obligations are fulfilled to the best of our ability,” said Milaor.

CMC Mine Environmental Protection and Enhancement Office (MEPEO) also supported the tree planting drive of Brgy. Valencia officials headed by Chairman Gesrael C. Tillo.

The tree planting took place near Pinagbahan creek, one of CMC's adopted water bodies in Dinagat Islands and was able to plant 197 native tree seedlings.

"This is a very important activity as it helps in the preservation of our nature," said Tillo.

Moreover, elementary students and teachers of Valencia Elementary School, a school fully supported by CMC through its Social Development and Management Program (SDMP), also joined the massive tree planting facilitated by CMC Mine Environmental Protection and Enhancement Office.

Finally, the essence of Earth Day celebration is to honor Mother Earth for its bountiful resources sustaining the needs of every person on the planet. It is part of our duty to protect and restore it.

Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, and Earth Day 2021 was celebrated on April 22. The holiday is now a global celebration that’s sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living.
