In an enriching community engagement initiative, on-the-job trainees (OJTs) from the Mindanao State University (MSU) - Maguindanao Campus visited Barangay Talavera, the host barangay of Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC). The visit was an integral part of their immersion program, designed to connect academic learning with real-world environmental and community experiences.

The group of OJTs, all pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Forestry with a major in General Forestry, consisted of Mohamidin P. Lumambas, Monir M. Pato, Amerudin K. Unsay, Al-Mohairin G. Usman, and Hamadin K. Mustapha. Their visit offered a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of forestry practices, community development, and the role of corporations like HMC in supporting both.

A Closer Look at the Community and Environment

The MSU students spent time learning about the sustainable practices in place at Barangay Talavera, where HMC has long been involved in environmental stewardship initiatives. Through this immersion, the students gained firsthand insight into the environmental challenges faced by the community and the various efforts made by both HMC and residents to protect natural resources and promote sustainable livelihoods.

The visit also provided the OJTs with a deeper appreciation for the integration of academic knowledge in real-world situations, particularly in the areas of reforestation, land management, and environmental conservation. The community’s active participation in these efforts, alongside HMC’s corporate initiatives, highlighted the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, local communities, and businesses in driving environmental sustainability.

Strengthening the Link Between Academia and Community

For the students, the visit served as a reminder of the critical role they will play in the future of forestry and environmental management. It also allowed them to witness firsthand the practical applications of their studies and how they can contribute to the betterment of both local communities and the environment.

As part of its ongoing commitment to education and community development, HMC continues to support initiatives that bridge the gap between students and communities, ensuring that the next generation of environmental professionals is equipped with both the knowledge and experience necessary to make a lasting impact.

This visit to Barangay Talavera was a meaningful and informative experience for the MSU OJTs, reinforcing the importance of field immersion in shaping well-rounded, socially responsible forestry professionals.
