The province of Eastern Samar has embarked on a transformative journey towards better health and wellness with the launch of a province-wide Surgical-Medical Mission.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 3, focusing on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.

A collaborative effort involving the NAC Foundation, Inc. (NACFI), St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc. (SLMCFI), and the Provincial Government of Eastern Samar, the mission aims to deliver essential medical services to underserved communities.

The welcome ceremony set a warm tone for the event, with SLMCFI President Dr. Benjamin Campomanes expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, “Sometimes, everybody thanks us, but actually, we would like to thank you for allowing us to help people. That is our mission—to help people.”

On the first day, specialists from St. Luke’s Medical Center, alongside medical staff from the Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital, initiated pre-screenings for surgical patients.

They also conducted a workshop on Perioperative Nursing Care, reinforcing the training provided by the St. Luke’s Healthcare Academy. This hands-on approach not only addresses immediate medical needs but also fosters a culture of health education within the community.

As the mission progressed into its second day, the impact became even more evident. A total of 147 patients received medical consultations, and six major surgeries were performed at the Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital.

Additionally, the St. Luke’s Healthcare Academy provided Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training for nurses while treating patients with Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) emergencies.

By day three, the mission had conducted 216 ENT consultations and successfully performed seven major surgeries and four minor procedures. The St. Luke’s Healthcare Academy continued its educational efforts, offering a lecture on Stroke and Coronary Artery Disease for nursing staff, highlighting the commitment to ongoing professional development.

On the fourth day, the momentum continued with 110 ENT consultations and surgeries for five major and three minor cases. The St. Luke’s Healthcare Academy conducted a Stroke Care Training for 36 nurses, further enhancing the capabilities of local healthcare providers.

Throughout this mission, the collaboration between NACFI, SLMCFI, and the Provincial Government of Eastern Samar has not only addressed urgent healthcare needs but has also laid the groundwork for a healthier future. With ongoing support and education, Eastern Samar is poised to make significant strides in promoting health and well-being for all its residents.

Together, these organizations are committed to fostering a culture of care, compassion, and community support, ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to everyone.
