HMC’s 30 scholars complete ALS

Thirty scholars of Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC), an affiliate of Nickel Asia Corporation have completed the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program.

Their completion was formally announced during the 11th ALS Completion Program held at Tagana-an Municipal Gymnasium.

A total of 104 ALS completers from different nearby community learning centers were recognized at the ceremony.

In his short speech, Dr. Oliver Dennis Lao, HMC’s Administrative Manager, thanked the graduates and encouraged them to dream big.

HMC supports three neighboring communities that have produced 30 ALS completers collectively: Sitio Bagong Silang with 11 students, Sitio Campandan with 13 students, and Barangay Talavera with six students.

All 30 ALS completers were fully supported in their schooling by HMC.

Denabie Conor, Sitio Campandan ALS facilitator acknowledged the support given by HMC to ALS students.

“Napakalaking tulong ang nakukuha namin sa HMC, especially ang mga supply na ibinibigay nila sa amin (ALS facilitators) kasi kinakailangan iyon sa pagtuturo ko. Iyong mga suporta na ibinibigay ng HMC ay nakakatulong dahil nag-i-improve ang mga estudyante ko na mas matuto pa silang mabuti,” said Conor.

HMC provides educational support to the youth from its host communities since 2010. Educational support is one of the projects under the Health, Education, Livelihood, Public utilities, and Socio-cultural (HELPS) program of HMC.

Through HELPS, HMC sends thousands of students from pre-school to college every year to school.

Based on the data from HMC Community Relations Office, from 2014 to this recent academic year, a total of 5,914 students were fully supported in their education.
