Together with the world last March 25, Rio Tuba in Palawan had their simple way of celebrating Earth Hour.
The residents, households, offices and businesses turned off their non – essential lights for one hour as a symbol of their support to address the problems on climate change.
The event was made possible through the collaboration of the Community Relations (ComRel) staff of Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corp (RTNMC) and Coral Bay Nickel Corp (CBNC), affiliates of Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC).
The Earth Hour Celebration was opened by “Bike for the Future” participated by 46 bikers. It was held to increase the awareness about the significance of conserving energy.
Environmental representatives of the companies namely Engr. Lily Catacutan of RTNMC and Engr. Briccio Abela shared some simple ways on reducing effects of greenhouse gases that result to global warming and eventually to climate change.
They both emphasized the importance of planting trees as it helps in carbon sequestration or getting back the carbon from the atmosphere.
“Our actions on climate change will shape the future for our children. They know more about climate change than any other generation and they have extraordinary views on what they want for their planet,” said Engr. Catacutan.
Participants went to the oval to participate in the event. Children were actively participating in the candle lighting and actively listening to the messages given and clips shown.
A Zumba competition and live band performance were held to entertain the audience and to encourage more participation from the community of Rio Tuba.
Rio Tuba will continuously join the world in Earth Hour Celebration through the unending support of RTNMC and CBNC to the community.
