To encourage proper hygiene and help prevent cases of diarrhea in community, 39 households in Sitio Magtunao, Barangay Culandanum in BATARAZA have received additional toilet pans.
Community organizer Vanessa Apilan said the turn over of 39 toilet pans was a follow up to the first 30 given to the community by Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) last July 31.
“Karamihan kasi sa mga IP, wala silang pribadong CR (comfort room) kaya tumulong din kaming mabigyan sila para na rin sa kalusugan. First time nila ngayon na mabigyan nito,” she said.
The distribution of toilet pans, also called squat latrines, was part of the health program allotted from the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) of the mining firm.
Apilan said before their distribution, the community relations team of RTN together with medical professionals from Department of Health (DOH) had initially conducted information and education campaign to inform the community on the importance of proper comfort room.
She said the area has also high cases of diarrhea due to absence of potable water.
“Mataas din ang cases ng diarrhea kaya niri-require na toilet bowl ang ibibigay sa kanila. Karamihan sa kanila may diarrhea dahil ang tubig din doon ay hindi malinis,” she said.
The 39 toilet bowls were given on August 23 together with bags of cement for the flooring.
The Sitio Magtunao in Brgy. Culandanum has a total population of 69 households.
